London agaveria Hacha has named Peter Scott and Christopher Elliot as the winners of Britain’s Best Tequila and Mezcal Cocktail 2022 competitions.

The winning serves, Apricot Haze (L) and Midas (R), will be on both Hacha menus for a year

Hacha, owned by industry couple Emma Murphy and Deano Moncrieff, launched the two competitions in 2019. They returned this year for the third time.

Both competitions were focused on each agave spirit category rather than a specific brand, in order to expand the scope and find the best Tequila and mezcal cocktail in the UK.

The 2022 Tequila partner brands included: Kah, Arette, Fortaleza, Don Julio, El Rayo, Vivir, Olmeca Altos, El Sueño and Patrón.

The mezcal partner brands included: Del Maguey, Madre, The Lost Explorer, Casamigos, Pensador and Mezcal Unión.

Competitors were invited to use any of the partner brands to create their cocktails.

The 11 chosen finalists across both categories were invited to participate in a live competition at Hacha Brixton on Wednesday 14 September, where they each presented their cocktail to a panel of judges comprising a selection of acclaimed drinks writers and industry luminaries from the UK, alongside last year’s winner, Courtney Francis.

The top two serves from each category were then put to the public vote the following day, and the winning cocktails were chosen on Friday 16 September.

Midas, created by Scott of The Glasshouse, Tunbridge Wells, was named as Britain’s Best Tequila Cocktail 2022. His used Vivir Blanco infused in coconut, along with Yellow Chartreuse, pineapple syrup, grapefruit bitters and ginger ale.

The title of Britain’s Best Mezcal Cocktail 2022 went to Apricot Haze, created by Elliot of Liverpool’s Present Company. His cocktail used Del Maguey Vida, Madre Espadin, homemade horchata, crème de cacao, chocolate bitter and homemade mint syrup.

The winning cocktails will now be exclusively available on Hacha’s menu for a year, at both the Brixton and Dalston sites.

The winners also received a portfolio of the complete line up of the spirits featured in the competition, as well as a first edition copy of The Tequila Ambassador by the late Tomas Estes.
