Angel’s Envy names master distiller

Bacardi-owned Kentucky producer Angel’s Envy has appointed Owen Martin, of Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, as its new master distiller.

Martin will join the Kentucky distillery on 17 October from his six-year tenure at Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, where he holds the position of head distiller.

He is the first appointed master distiller of Louisville-based Angel’s Envy, following the death of co-founder and master distiller Lincoln Henderson in 2013.

In his new position, Martin will lead production and oversee innovation for the brand, including its annual Cask Strength programme and limited edition Cellar Collection and Founder’s Collection.

Based at the newly expanded distillery in downtown Louisville, Martin will manage the production team as it continues to release cask-finished bottlings.

In June this year, Angel’s Envy completed its US$8.2 million visitor centre expansion.

“Owen’s experience in product development and experimentation and his progressive outlook regarding what’s next for the industry, as well as the leadership he has demonstrated throughout his career in defining and championing American whiskey categories, make him a perfect fit to lead Angel’s Envy into our exciting future.”

Martin previously studied at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he gained a passion for cask-finished whiskeys.

“Angel’s Envy has been a trailblazer in redefining the finished whiskey category in the US, and the chance to be a part of the next chapter for a young brand that has already made such a large impact on the industry is truly the opportunity of a lifetime,” said Martin.

“I look forward to bringing my knowledge of secondary cask finishing and unique perspective of European and American production techniques, as well as my expertise in product development and passion for experimentation, to the foremost secondary-finished Bourbon and rye producer in the country.”
