Non-profit organisation B Lab accredits companies with B Corp certification after they meet or exceed the B Impact Assessment criteria, which measures a firm’s social impact across categories. These requirements include corporate governance, the environment, community, employees and customers.

Launched in September 2020, Mijenta’s products are all carbon-neutral as the company offsets almost 720,000kg of carbon dioxide through its partnership with Climate Partner.

The collaboration with Climate Partner has supported cloud forest protection and local community support in Chiapas, Mexico.

Furthermore, it has helped to provide clean wind energy for local communities in northeast Brazil.

Elise Som, Mijenta co-founder and director of sustainabilty, who has a Masters in sustainability from Harvard University and Parsons, said: “Community and sustainability lie at the heart of Mijenta’s mission, and we are thrilled that with this certification, B Lab has affirmed the significant focus we’ve placed on implementing our core values.

“Through innovation, close collaboration with local suppliers and partnerships with likeminded organisations, we have worked from the outset to create a positive, lasting impact.

“For us, sustainability is about leaving a better world for our children, and we are excited to do even more as we continue to grow.”

Other sustainable endeavours by Mijenta Tequila include using locally sourced agave waste from Guadalajara for Mijenta labels and notecards.

The blanco and reposado expressions are packaged in boxes made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper. The boxes use a single strip of non-toxic glue and include no coating or varnish. The seal ring in the bottle cap is biodegradable.

No pesticides or herbicides are used on the agave harvested to make Mijenta Tequila.

Mijenta also works with local businesses and communities, using exclusively Mexican partners to source packaging, and enhance its local and sustainable ethos. Organisations include Whales of Guerrero and The Ocean Foundation.
