Angostura Zenith goes on sale for $3,000
By Melita KielyCaribbean rum producer the House of Angostura has released a limited edition expression made with rare liquid from the closed Caroni Distillery, called Angostura Zenith.
The House of Caroni was established in 1923 on the site of the old Caroni sugar factory on the island of Trinidad, where the House of Angostura is also situated.
The distillery was known for producing rums with a heavy profile – ‘rich, earthy and smoky’.
Using the last of Caroni’s molasses, Zenith combines liquid from both the Caroni and Angostura distilleries. The blend includes Caroni rums aged from 20 to 23 years.
Terrence Bharath, chairman of Angostura Holdings, said: “After three years in development, we’re delighted to extend our Private Cask Collection with the launch of Angostura Zenith, making our rum offering one of the most unique in the world.
“We are constantly striving to bring the spirit of Trinidad & Tobago to rum connoisseurs around the world and the launch of Angostura Zenith demonstrates our commitment to producing world-class rums.”
Tasting notes include aromas of tropical mango, pineapple, lime zest and dark brown sugar. On the palate, flavours include caramelised sugars, butterscotch, banoffee pie, allspice, fresh ginger and lime zest.
The finish is said to be long, well-rounded and complex, leaving pepper and wooded oak.
Only 195 bottles of Angostura Zenith have been created. The rum was launched at an exclusive party in Trinidad in June, where several bottles were snapped up.
In the UK, Angostura Zenith will sell for £2,500, and can be found at select retailers. Elsewhere, the bottle will retail for US$3,000.

Last year, we looked at how producers of Caribbean rum are eager to grow their presence in Europe – but are seeking greater support from regulators to protect the category’s provenance.
