Koskenkorva distillery to run on wind power

Anora Group has signed an agreement with energy company Fortum to run Koskenkorva distillery on local wind power.

Kalax wind farm in Närpiö, Finland will supply the energy to the distillery, and consists of 21 wind turbines.

“Climate change mitigation and carbon neutrality are challenges that we all share,” said Kalle Kuokka, Fortum’s vice-president in charge of power trading.

“We are very pleased to support Anora in achieving its climate goals. Fortum’s goal is to build more emission-free wind and solar power. Implementing these projects, together with our customers, is of paramount importance to us.”

The deal will allow up to half of electricity used by Anora at Koskenkorva distillery to be replaced by wind energy.

The partnership will run from 2023-2025.

The news follows Anora Group recently re-evaluating its sustainability strategy to achieve its green goals, which include achieving carbon-neutral production. The new sustainability roadmap is due to be published this year.

”Anora’s goal is to be a pioneer in sustainability and reduce the fossil CO2 emissions from its production operations to zero without compensations,” added Miika Jokinen, business unit director, industrial products and services, from Anora.

“This wind power agreement is a natural continuation of the previous investments in circular economy and bioenergy that reduce emissions at the Koskenkorva distillery. We have been working with Fortum for a long time and this agreement deepens our cooperation in a natural way.”

Anora’s bioenergy plant claims to have already reduced the emissions from the Koskenkorva plant by around 60% since 2014. Meanwhile, geothermal energy accounts for 70% of the energy used by Anora’s Gjelleråsen plant in Norway.

Anora Group recently revealed its sales figures for the first quarter of its 2022 fiscal year, with spirits sales up while wine sales declined.
