‘World’s first’ molecular beverage printer revealed

California-based company Cana has created an at-home drinks dispensing system, which it claims is the ‘world’s first’ molecular beverage printer.

The Cana One machine uses a cartridge to ‘print’ drinks both with and without alcohol, from juices and iced coffees to hard seltzers and cocktails.

It’s the latest addition to the home bar machine space, which has seen its popularity wane over the past few years. In December 2021, Anheuser-Busch InBev and Keurig Dr Pepper decided to axe their at-home alcohol system, Drinkworks, altogether; the year before, Pernod Ricard scrapped its version of an at-home cocktail-making machine.

But Cana hopes to breathe new life into the trend with its technology, which took three years to develop.

The company’s team, which includes veterans of Nike, Anheuser-Busch InBev, Google, Apple and more, identified and isolated the compounds that create the flavours and aromas of popular beverages.

They then created a ‘universal beverage ingredient set’ that can produce thousands of different drinks from one cartridge.

Each cartridge lasts about a month; it can then be returned to the company, where cartridges will be reused up to 12 times before being recycled. Cana also replaces the cartridges for free.

“Cana One is designed to give each customer convenience, savings, and an experience they didn’t know they were craving – while cleaning up the planet,” said Matt Mahar, Cana CEO.

“It’s like having a personalised beverage aisle in your kitchen – with zero trash or hassle from plastic, aluminium, and glass containers.”

The Cana One machine will be priced at US$799, though the first 10,000 orders will pay a reduced price of US$499. The machine is expected to roll out in early 2023.
