Our round-up of March’s standout events includes a Tequila pop-up, a US-based Shochu Cocktail Week,  and innovative launches, new cocktail lists and a competition for aquavit fans.

Shochu Cocktail Week

What: A fortnight of Shochu-led cocktails
Where: US-based locations
When: 1-14 March

Shochu fans are finally getting their due, as the first Shochu Cocktail Week launches from today (1 March) until 14 March in New York, Chicago, Austin, San Francisco, and in Washington DC. Celebrating the Japanese spirit, bars in these cities will be serving up limited-time cocktail menus featuring the drink.

In Austin, participating bars include Half Step and Daijoubu at Drink.Well.

New York venues include: Martiny’s; Patent Pedning; Rule of Thirds; Bar Goto; Bandits; and NR. In Chicago, Bar Kumiko will be the one and only bar getting involved, while in San Francisco Pabu and Kona Street Market will be welcoming fans. Finally, in Washington DC, Silver Lyan will be serving up a top range of Shochu cocktails.


Black Cow x Live at The Amadeus

What: Live music and cocktails
Where: The Amadeus, London
When: 4 March-22 April

Milk-based vodka brand Black Cow is supporting a series of live music events this month, while also providing a cocktail menu of four drinks. The cocktail list includes the Black Cow Negroni, the Skinny Cow and the Dorset Donkey for guests to sip on. Gus Robertson, formerly of the band Razorlight, will host the event. The first musical session of the series will feature musical artists Ma Su ‘n Redberry.


Illegal Mezcal x Mister Paradise

What: Mezcal drinks and music
Where: The Washington Irving Inn, New York
When: 4-5 March

The Hunter-based Irving Inn is bringing Illegal Mezcal drinks and food, created by bar Mister Paradise, to guests, who can also enjoy a performance by musical artist Susu. The event will head to Florida, California, Texas and other US cities later this year.


Swift x Cambridge Public House

What: Paris- and London-based bar swap
Where: The Cambridge Public House, Paris, and Swift Shoreditch, London
When: 6-7 March

Swift Shoreditch has teamed up with Paris-based The Cambridge Public House to launch a takeover at each other’s respective venues.

Kicking off on 6 March, the Swift team will unveil a cocktail menu in the French bar, including Spritz-style Ice Maiden made using Belvedere pear vodka, Crème de poire, Lillet Blanc, Ginger and topped up with sparkling wine. The next day, The Cambridge Public House team will bring their own drinks to Swift in London.


Sunday Lyan Series returns

What: Female-led Sunday Lyan takeover
Where: Lyaness, Southbank, London
When: 5pm GMT, 13 March

In partnership with Fever Tree, London-based Lyaness bar is bringing back its Sunday series to celebrate the drinks industry and preview ideas and flavours from 5pm GMT at the end of the week.

Try an array of unique cocktails and menus curated for the evening, as well as hip hop music for entertainment. March’s session will also bring a female-led team to Lyaness bar to mark International Woman’s Day (8 March).


Aquavit cocktail competition

What: Silver Circle Distillery’s aquavit contest
Where: Online
When: Entries close 15 March

Calling all aspiring and professional mixologists: Silver Circle Distillery has teamed up with Cardiff-based Lab 22 to invite cocktail enthusiasts to enter a competition with the ‘perfect’ aquavit cocktail.

Entries must be submitted via email, and include the contender’s name, Instagram handle, cocktail recipe and a few sentences about their inspiration to: hello@silvercircledistillery.com. All entries must be submitted by 15 March, and participants will hear the results on 22 March.

On 5 April, those who have been successful will attend Lab 22 to compete in person.


Victor George Spirits’ launch events

What: US-based launch events
Where: Ohio, US
When: 18 March, plus more dates TBC

Black-owned Victor George Spirits is hosting a number of events to mark its national launch across the US this month, beginning in Columbus, Ohio, on 18 March. The first event took place at Black-owned restaurant Bar One, owned by Real Housewives of Atlanta star Peter Thomas. Details of the Columbus-based venue are to follow.

This spring, Victor George Spirits will be unveiling its 15,000 square-foot facility, which will house a distillery, restaurant, cigar bar, whiskey lounge and rooftop bar located on historic Sistrunk Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Additional launch events are scheduled in Ohio, Atlanta, California and Chicago later this year.


Hacha Brixton x Patrón pop-up

What: Margarita and vinyl store pop-up
Where: Hacha, Brixton
When: Until 19 March

The Agaveria, at London-based Hacha, is hosting a Patrón Tequila pop-up record shop until 19 March, celebrating all things Margaritas and music. Bespoke Patrón cocktails will be on hand, and a DJ will be spinning the decks every Thursday and Saturday.


International Women’s Day bar takeover

What: Cocktails and music to mark International Women’s Day
Where: Doña, London, UK
When: Throughout March

Mezcal and music bar Doña is launching Herbody, an event to bring ‘songs of the sisterhood’ and speciality drinks to awaken the ‘empowered feminine’. Included in the serves will be Margaret, a mezcal Margarita that includes lime and agave topped with a spicy Tajin garnish of chilli and salt, and Doña, made up of freshly squeezed ginger and lime alongside white vermouth and Dangerous Don Café.
