La Martiniquaise-Bardinet launches Ching Shih
French drinks group La Martiniquaise-Bardinet has debuted a Dark Spiced bottling under its new Ching Shih brand.
The premium Caribbean spirit drink was inspired by Zheng Yi Sao, a Chinese female pirate also known as Ching Shih.
Active in the South China Sea from 1801 to 1810, the pirate leader went undefeated as commander of the Red Flag Fleet, with 80,000 pirates under her rule.
The brand said she reigned over the male-dominated seas of the Middle Kingdom, bringing ‘an entire empire to its knees’.
The spirit drink delivers notes of vanilla, cinnamon and toffee. It is recommended served as a Ching Cola, comprising 30ml Dark Spiced, 120ml cola, plus lime and ice.
It also suggested served as a Ching Ginger, which consists of 30ml Dark Spiced mixed with 120ml of ginger ale.
The 700ml bottle, made with ‘natural’ flavours, clocks in at 32% ABV. It can be purchased for RRP €12 (US$13.15).
Last year, La Martiniquaise-Bardinet extended its Cutty Sark portfolio with the launch of a 12-year-old blended whisky.
The French drinks group also took over the UK distribution rights for Scottish distiller Eden Mill in May 2021.
