Just over 600 businesses in the UK are certified B Corp. Nc’nean was certified by B Lab, the non-profit behind the B Corp award, after meeting ‘rigorous’ social and environmental standards.

The B Corp certification addresses business operations as a whole, covering five key areas: governance, workers, community, environment and customers. The average UK score is 88; Nc’nean scored 135.6.

Annabel Thomas, Nc’nean founder, said: “I’ve long admired the B Corp movement and many of its members, so I’m very proud to finally be able to call ourselves B Corp.

“Here at Nc’nean, we are very familiar with certification processes, but B Corp is by far the most comprehensive and rigorous process we have been through.

“And partly for that reason, I’m extremely pleased with our very high score of 73.3 under the environmental stewardship section, reflecting our long-standing commitment to championing the most sustainable production processes.”

In July 2021, Nc’nean became the first net zero whisky distillery in the UK. The producer’s 2020 carbon footprint was the first to be verified by Environmental Strategies as net zero in the UK.

The wider Scotch whisky industry’s net zero target is set for 2040 – meaning Nc’nean reached net zero 20 years ahead of this goal.

The distiller is now part of more than 4,400 businesses worldwide that are certified as B Corps.

Chris Turner, executive director of B Corp, added: “We are pleased to have B Corps of all shapes and sizes as part of our community – from start-ups to multinationals and across many different industries.

“Business is a powerful force and B Corps demonstrate that you can do good in any sector.

“Welcoming Nc’nean is an exciting moment because they have an opportunity to lead the way within the whisky industry.”
