Distiller creates gin with Natural History Museum

Yorkshire-based Cooper King Distillery has released an exclusive carbon-negative gin in partnership with London’s Natural History Museum.

Made using fresh basil, lemongrass and clove, the new Discovery Gin is cold-distilled in small batches using 100% renewable energy.

For every 700ml bottle, 1kg of carbon dioxide equivalent is removed from the atmosphere (including carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases) and one square metre of English woodland is planted through the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust.

The bottle is made from 55% recycled glass and labelled by hand at the distillery.

“The museum’s pledge to cut emissions to net zero by 2035 is exactly aligned with our own philosophy,” said Chris Jaume, who founded Cooper King Distillery with Dr Abbie Neilson. “We’re also keen to encourage advocates for the planet – and this gin is a brilliant and inventive way to spread the word and promote positive change.”

Proceeds from the sale of the gin will help the museum continue its research and look after its collections.

Carla Treasure, buyer for the Natural History Museum shop, added: “Our product ranges are inspired by the wonders of the natural world, so it has been really exciting working with Cooper King Distillery to create this innovative, delicious gin.

“Our ambition is to become a leader in sustainable retail, so we’re delighted to offer such an environmentally friendly product that has such a beautiful taste. As for the name, discovery is what we hope people experience when they visit the museum.”

Cooper King Discovery Gin (40% ABV) is available to buy from the museum shop or online for RRP £39 (US$51.60).

The release of the expression follows the launch of Cooper King’s first carbon-negative gins in February 2021.
