Black Button Distilling hosts whisky auction
By Alice BrookerMore than 250 barrels of vintage whisky will be sold by New York-based Black Button Distilling as part of its digital auction series.
The grain-to-glass spirits producer will kick off its online auction series of rare, aged whisky barrels on Wednesday 4 August, at 11am ET.
Jason Barrett, president and founder of Black Button Distilling, said: “I’m excited to bring these barrels to craft distillers as a new way of procuring whiskey.
“Our plan is to hold auctions twice a year to connect buyers with sellers, supporting a freer flow of sharing excess product to places where it will be helpful.”
The barrels of whisky have been crafted in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, and comprise cask strength Canadian rye and blended Canadian whiskies, aged for up to 20 years.
The distillery said the auction series is a ‘step towards industry transparency and camaraderie’ after a challenging year for craft distillers.
Barrett added: “We’re proud to be in a unique position to help our fellow craft distillers grow their businesses, while Black Button continues to grow as well.”
The auction will take place through Blackbird Auction’s website, as a ‘digital-only whisky exchange’, with the barrels available to licensed distillers in the US and Canada.
In 2019, US drinks group Constellation Brands acquired a minority stake in Black button distilling.
