Procera uses African juniper to make its gin

Kenya-based Nairobi Distillers launched Procera Gin in 2019 with an aim to showcase African botanicals from across the continent.

Most gin is produced using common juniper (juniper communis). However, Procera is the first gin to also use African juniper (juniper procera), which is harvested 70km from the distillery.

The brand’s first bottling is Procera Blue Dot, made with 10 botanicals including Madagascan pink pepper, Moroccan orris root and Somali honey.

Bottled at 44% ABV, Procera Blue Dot retails for RRP £70 (US$99) per bottle. It comes packaged in a 500ml hand-blown glass bottle made by Kenyan artists. According to the producer, only 100 bottles can be made each day.

Procera Gin is currently available to purchase in the UK, the US, Hong Kong, France and Germany.

UK gin fans can also find Procera Gin in acclaimed London venues Dukes and the Connaught Bar.

Procera also revealed its Red Dot Limited Edition 2021 (52% ABV) bottling would be available in the UK from October in ‘highly’ limited quantities, priced at an RRP of £79.95 (US$112).
