Edinburgh Whisky Academy is now offering spirits enthusiasts and professionals the chance to complete a certificate in Irish whiskey

The new course was developed with the help of Irish whiskey experts Fionnán O’Connor and Matt Healy, with an aim to provide comprehensive online education for whisky fans and industry professionals in the UK, Ireland, the US, Europe and beyond.

The certificate in Irish whiskey consists of eight modules, each designed to enhance knowledge and appreciation of the various types of Irish whiskey available.

Topics covered will include the history of Irish whiskey, equipment used to make the spirit and how this might differ with different mash bills, and production processes.

The course will also offer the chance to take part in a tutored tasting of the four different Irish whiskey styles by purchasing a tasting selection from online whiskey retailer Three Drams.

Kirsty McKerrow, who founded the Edinburgh Whisky Academy in 2015 and is now managing director of the company, said: “As post-Covid economic activity resumes, it’s likely that Irish whiskey’s popularity will continue to grow, so our new certificate in Irish whiskey provides an ideal grounding for anyone hoping to develop or nurture a career in the industry, or simply for enthusiasts who want to know more about Ireland’s ‘water of life’.

“We know that sales staff, distillery guides and spirits retailers, as well as hospitality industry employees in hotels, bars and restaurants have benefitted from our various Scotch whisky and gin courses and are looking forward to providing them with what we hope will be a career-enhancing insight into the wonders of Irish whiskey.”

Scotland-based Edinburgh Whisky Academy has provided training to distillers and hospitality professionals, including The Macallan, Ian Macleod Distillers, Interbev, Montpeliers and Whyte & Mackay.

The certificate in Irish whiskey costs £99 (US$135), plus an optional additional payment of £34.95 (US$48) for the sampling kit.

Other courses offered by the academy include the online Scottish Qualifications Authority-certified (SQA) certificate in Scotch whisky, and the diploma in single malt whisky – the only one of its kind.

There is also a diploma in the art of tasting whisky, and a diploma in gin. Furthermore, spirits enthusiasts can also partake in three online modules and courses: focus on flavour, wake up your whisky nose, and certificate in gin.
