Hard seltzer brand Lilo launches in UK
By Nicola CarruthersThe Alcoholic Water Company has released Lilo, which is said to have the lowest alcohol and calorie content of any hard seltzer currently available in the UK.
The Lilo hard seltzer range consists of two variants: White Grape and Elderflower, and Cranberry and Rosehip. Both expressions have an ABV of 3.5% and are made with sparkling Scottish water and botanical spirits.
Lilo White Grape and Elderflower contains 44 calories and is made using a botanical distillate with lemon verbena and orange peel to ‘enhance’ the flavours of white grape and elderflower extract.
Meanwhile, Lilo Cranberry and Rosehip contains 43 calories and is made using a botanical spirit with grains of paradise. The product is described as ‘woody and earthy’ with notes of lemon and citrus that enrich the flavours of tart cranberry.
The packaging has been designed by artist Maria Rivans and features cityscapes and wild animals.
According to IWSR 2019 research, hard seltzers are likely to see the highest growth rate within the UK’s ready-to-drink category, with a forecast compound annual growth rate of 71.7% by volume from 2019 to 2024.
Ivana Markotic, marketing director at The Alcoholic Water Company, said: “As the UK continues to embrace the hard seltzer movement that is taking over the world, we are excited to bring a premium and flavour-focused addition to the category. We’re bringing an artful approach to Lilo – inspired by creativity and using the perfect blend of bespoke botanicals and pure Scottish water as the base. Lilo is the perfect option for those looking to explore a more mindful approach to drinking, without compromising on flavour.”
Lilo is the debut brand from newly-formed firm The Alcoholic Water Company. The business was founded in November 2019 by the founders of Scotland’s The Start-Up Drinks Lab, Hannah Fisher and Craig Strachan, alongside drinks marketing specialists Drew Shannon and Greg Saunders.
The company plans to release a portfolio of premium hard seltzers over the coming years. Each brand will offer all the common product attributes of a hard seltzer, alongside other benefits such as the use of Scottish water and botanical spirits created by an undisclosed Scottish distiller.
Lilo is available to buy in the UK from Lilodrinks.com and specialist retailers, priced at £25.99 (US$35) for 12 250ml cans.
