Moomins and Kyrö create charity whisky

Finland’s Kyrö Distillery Company has collaborated with the firm behind the Moomins series of books to auction six bottles of whisky for charity.

The label on the bottle was designed to honour Tove Jansson’s original Moomin illustrations

To celebrate 75 years since Finnish illustrator Tove Jansson published her first Moomin book, the Kyrö Distillery Company has partnered with Moomin Characters to create a special batch of Moomin rye whiskey.

The six 500ml bottles of Moominpappa’s Bounty of the Sea rye malt whisky will be sold in pairs through online auction house Lauritz.

“We are really excited to see the final bid for this special product made to honour the Moomin story and its creator Tove Jansson,” said Miika Lipiäinen, CEO of Kyrö Distillery Company.

All profits from the six bottles will be donated to the Our Sea campaign, which seeks to protect the Baltic Sea and its heritage. The sea has played a vital role in the Moomin stories, starting with the first tale, The Moomins and the Great Flood.

The whisky was aged in unique Moomin barrels at the distillery in Isokyrö, Finland, for three years. The expression was made with 100% malted Finnish winter rye and matured in harsh Finnish conditions, resulting in “sweet, spicy and earthy tones”.

The label on the bottle was designed to honour Jansson’s original Moomin illustrations.

“We admire the attitude with which the Kyrö Distillery has brought Finnish know-how, quality, and vision to the international market,” said Roleff Kråkström, CEO of Moomin Characters. “They are open-minded and bold in everything they do.

“Tove Jansson was also a friend of good whisky and Moominpappa knew how to appreciate this noble drink.”

The first two bottles in the batch are on sale now, with the auction due to end on 18 October.
