Joy at Portobello Dock

London bar and restaurant Joy has opened on the site of the former Dock Kitchen in Portobello Dock.

The 70-cover pop-up bar and restaurant has been filled with hundreds of dahlia flowers and also boasts a honey store, bottle shop and farm-to-fork grocers.

At its bar and restaurant, Joy will offer a daily changing menu of dishes and drinks, which have been created with hyper-seasonal British ingredients.

Boodles afternoon tea cocktails

To celebrate Afternoon Tea Week, which runs until 16 August, British gin brand Boodles has created a menu of cocktails for at-home mixologists to serve alongside their tea and cakes.

The cocktails, which are suggested served in tea pots to match the afternoon tea aesthetic, include the Ruby Martines, which combines Boodles Rhubarb & Strawberry Gin, vermouth and maraschino liqueur, and the Gin & Gomme, which is made with Boodles Gin, pineapple juice, mango purée and lemon juice.

Double Standard Brunch

Double Standard at London hotel The Standard has launched its first bottomless brunch offering.

The bar and restaurant will serve up bottomless brunches this weekend on its outside terrace or inside.

Guests will be able to combine dishes on the menu, including the Brunch Burger with Bloody Mary ketchup, bacon and smoked cheddar, with bottomless Bloody Mary cocktails or Prosecco for £30 (US$39).

Smokehead TV

Islay Scotch whisky brand Smokehead will premiere another episode of Smokehead TV this Sunday (16 August).

The latest instalment will feature brand ambassador Mikey Sim, who will lead a tasting of the brand’s newest whisky Rum Rebel, which was finished in Caribbean rum casks. During the episode, the audience will also learn to make signature serves with the new whisky.

Smokehead TV will be available to watch on the brand’s Instagram account, @smokeheadwhisky on Sunday.

St-Germain Summer Terrace

Elderflower liqueur brand St-Germain has launched a series of summer terraces at bars and restaurants across the UK.

Venues including Dalston Roof Park, London, and The Frog by Adam Handling, London, now feature the “flower festooned spaces”. Open through August and September, the St-Germain terraces will offer floral-themed outdoor drinking.

For those looking to recreate the experience at home, St-Germain has partnered with drinks experts Heads, Hearts & Tails to launch a nationwide cocktail delivery service,which will deliver Spritz Kits direct to consumers.

Discount Suit Company reopens

UK bar operator The Umbrella Project has reopened its east London venues The Sun Tavern and Discount Suit Company.

Reopening for the first time in five months, the two venues will operate in line with distancing measures to create a safe socialising environment for all.

At Discount Suit Company, guests will be able to enjoy staples including the Whipping Boy, with Ocho Blanco Tequila, Lillet Rose, citrus, olive brine and agave, and A Cockney Touch, made with Dewar’s whisky, fino Sherry, citrus, grapefruit syrup and soda.

Edinburgh Gin Distillery tours

Edinburgh Gin distillery has reopened its doors for tours and tastings.

The Ian Macleod Distillers-owned site will offer a new tour and tasting experience, which includes an opportunity to sample five gins and gin liqueurs from Edinburgh Gin.

The experience will take place in a large space at the distillery bar in view of the stills. In line with government guidance, preparation of drinks and tasting vessels will be carried out by staff in protective equipment and all drinks will be served from closed bottles, poured by visitors themselves. Visitors will also be asked to wear masks on arrival and while moving around, and there will be dedicated hygiene stations with readily available hand sanitiser.

Hospitality Advice Clinic

The Hospitality Insurance Group Action (HIGA) will host an Advice Clinic for hotels, restaurants, cafés and bars next week (20 August).

The virtual session, which is open to businesses within the hospitality sector, aims to support businesses that are unsure about the right way to proceed with their Covid-19 business interruption insurance claims.

The Advice Clinic will be run by Sonia Campbell, a partner at leading London law firm, Mishcon de Reya, on Zoom at 10.30am BST. To register to attend, contact higa@mishcon.com.

Whisky Exchange Tasting

On Thursday (20 August), spirits retailer The Whisky Exchange will host a virtual tasting with Glenfiddich’s malt master Brian Kinsman.

Kinsman will be in conversation with The Whisky Exchange team and will lead a tasting of the Glenfiddich distillery’s classic range, including the 18-year-old, Glenfiddich IPA and 23-year-old Grand Cru.

The tasting will be live-streamed on Facebook from 5:30pm BST and a tasting pack can be purchased online ahead of the event.
