English distillery marks Yorkshire Day with new whisky

Spirit of Yorkshire launched a single malt whisky to celebrate Yorkshire Day on 1 August.

Filey Bay Yorkshire Day is limited to 1,500 bottles

Filey Bay Yorkshire Day is the first whisky in a new limited edition range that will launch annually at the distillery’s open day on or around Yorkshire Day (1 August), which promotes the English county of Yorkshire.

Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery’s co-founder, David Thompson, said: “Although we had to cancel this year’s open day, we have been working hard behind the scenes to bring this long awaited release to market and are delighted that we will have it for sale in the distillery shop on 1st August.”

The new expression is a combination of Bourbon and PX sherry casks that were laid down in 2016 and bottled at a higher strength than other releases at 55% ABV. It is limited to 1,500 bottles.

Spirit of Yorkshire’s whisky director, Joe Clark, described the expression as “rich and spicy with flavours of dried fruits, cocoa, honey, hazelnut, caramel and black pepper”.

He added: “With only 1500 bottles available, Filey Bay Yorkshire Day is our rarest whisky release to date. It’s also our oldest whisky to be bottled so far and is very unlikely to be around for long.”

Filey Bay Yorkshire Day is priced at £85 (US$110) per 700ml and is available exclusively from the distillery shop and online from Spirit of Yorkshire.

Earlier this year, Spirit of Yorkshire distillery released the second batch of Filey Bay whisky, the English county’s “first” single malt.
