Licor 43 cocktail competition heads online

Spanish liqueur Licor 43 will host its Bartenders and Baristas Challenge in a digital format this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 2019 edition of Licor 43’s Bartenders and Barista Challenge was held in Gran Canaria

The Zamora Company-owned liqueur is calling on cocktail and coffee experts across the word to creatively pair Licor 43 with coffee. However, instead of pairing up the bartenders and baristas, this year entrants are asked to enter alone.

The fourth edition of the competition will run virtually across Licor 43’s website and social media channels.

“We want to show our support for, and solidarity with, bartenders and baristas during the Covid-19 pandemic, and running our 2020 edition online means we can still continue to educate about, and instil passion for, Licor 43 as the reference liqueur of choice in coffee cocktails,” said Julian Fernandez, Zamora Company’s global marketing and innovation director of spirits.

“Coffee has always been in Licor 43’s roots, going right back to the Café Asiatico in Cartagena and Café Barraquito in Tenerife in the 1950s. In the last 20 years, following the success of Carajillo 43 in Mexico, we have seen an increase in popularity of Licor 43 and coffee drinks all around the world.

“There is a natural marriage of aromas and flavours between the two and in the last three years we’ve run this competition it’s been clear how much of an inspiration this is to entrants. Just as we are amazed at their creativity, we are using our own agility and technical know-how to help them bring their skills and specialisms onto the stage in these strange times.”

Entrants can sign up to the competition by submitting films of themselves making their drinks for the national rounds. Local judging teams will choose between six and 10 finalists with one entrant going through to the global final.

Cocktail experts Simon Difford, of Difford’s Guide, and Merijn Gijsbers, along with coffee consultant and educator Timon Kaufmann, will judge the finalists.

The global finalists’ final films will be shown on Facebook, with an additional winner chosen by a public vote on 23 October 2020.

To enter the competition, visit Licor 43’s website.

Last year’s competition, held in Gran Canaria, Spain, crowned team Australia the winner of the Licor 43 Bartenders and Baristas Challenge 2019.
