Gautier Cognac 1762 sets new auction record

Auctioneer Sotheby’s set a new record for the most expensive bottle of Cognac sold at auction after a bottle of Gautier Cognac 1762 fetched £118,580 (US$144,525) under the hammer.

Gautier Cognac 1762 has set a new record for the most expensive Cognac sold at auction

An Asian private collector placed the winning bid during Sotheby’s Distilled | Iconic Samaroli, Dalmore 62 and The World’s Oldest Cognac sale. The total value of the sale reached £1.5 million (US$1.8m).

Only three bottles of the Cognac remain and the bottle that sold is the largest of the trio. It is known as ‘grand frère’ in French, meaning ‘big brother’ in English.

The Cognac’s ‘little sister’, or ‘petite sœur’, is kept in the Gautier Museum. The ‘little brother’ of the collection, or ‘petit frere’, was sold at auction in New York, US, in 2014.

Gautier Cognac 1762 ‘Grand Frère’ is the oldest vintage Cognac ever sold auction.
