Isles of Scilly inspire new English rum
An entrepreneurial family from the Isles of Scilly worked with the English Spirit company to create a new rum, called Daymark 1683 Original.
Daymark 1683 Rum is made from a base of Venezuelan molasses
The expression was inspired by The Daymark, located at the highest point of St Martin’s, Isles of Scilly, off the coast of Cornwall in England.
The Daymark lighthouse was built as an aid to nautical navigation in 1683, designed and built by Thomas Ekins. It is the earliest surviving example of a beacon in the British isles.
Daymark 1683 Original is triple-distilled from Venezuelan molasses and is infused with hand-picked samphire and sea salt. The rum is then matured in British oak casks.
Oli Strong, of Daymark, said: “Having spent many years drinking and enjoying rum on family holidays we were inspired by our roots in the Scilly Isles to create a sipping rum that appealed to whisky and gin drinkers.
“We tested, tasted and taught ourselves from scratch. We learnt, laughed and laboured to create a product we love. Seeing the global rise of rum sales have encouraged us hugely.”
Tasting notes provided by Strong include dried fruit, caramel and treacle, leading to a “gentle iodine hint of samphire and sea salt” to deliver a “fresh, clean taste”.
Bottled at 42% ABV, Daymark 1683 Original is available from the family website, daymark1683.co.uk, priced at £37.50 (US$46) per 700ml bottle.
