Nc’nean secures £1.7m in funding to support growth

Highland distillery Nc’nean has raised more than £1.7 million (US$2.2m) in funding to help accelerate its growth and support the launch of its first whisky this year.

Highland distillery Nc’nean is planning to launch its first whisky in 2020

Nc’nean is based on the west coast of Scotland and was founded by Annabel Thomas and Derek Lewis in 2013. The site runs entirely on renewable energy.

In December last year, the sustainable distillery launched a Seedrs campaign to raise £1 million (US$1.3m) to support further portfolio expansion, continue the growth of its botanical spirit and to buy bottling equipment.

Nc’nean reached its target just over a week after launching the campaign.

In addition, the producer has gained further funding from existing and new private investors, bringing the total investment to more than £1.7m (US$2.2m).

“Nc’nean’s funding success shows the overwhelming support from our community in what we do,” said Thomas.

“We would like to thank our existing investors for their continued support and welcome all our new investors on board.

“Since inception, we have strived to drive change in the whisky industry through experimental spirits and sustainable production. 2020 will be our most exciting year to date as we introduce our whisky to the world for the first time and continue to grow our business.”

Kerry Sharp, director of the Scottish Investment Bank, the investment arm of Scottish Enterprise, said: “We are delighted to support this female-led innovative young company, which has a strong commitment to sustainability and is creating additional jobs in a rural area of Scotland.

“The Scottish Investment Bank has been pleased to support Nc’nean and congratulates the company on its latest funding round. We are excited to see how Nc’nean flourishes in the future and look forward to the release of its first whisky later this year.”

While Nc’nean waits for its Scotch to fully mature, the Highland distillery released its first expression – a botanical spirit – in September 2018.

Nc’nean Botanical Spirit is made from the distillery’s new make spirit, which is redistilled with a range of botanicals, including fresh grapefruit, locally foraged herbs such as bog myrtle and heather, coriander and juniper. Most recently, the producer added an Aged Botanical Spirit to its range.
