Distell gives 10% of Scotch whisky sales to help on-trade
South African drinks group Distell is donating 10% of online sales from its Tobermory, Bunnahabhain and Deanston Scotch whisky distilleries to support hospitality workers across the country.
The proceeds will be donated to Scottish drinks industry charity The Ben to help on-trade employees affected by covid-19.
The Ben said it has faced “unprecedented demand” for its services, which include social, emotional and financial support for the licensed trade.
Fraser Thornton, managing director of Distell, said: “The industry is facing one of the most challenging periods in its history and there are many individuals in our communities who have been severely impacted by the recent lockdown.
“The Ben is playing a fantastic role in providing direct assistance when it’s needed most, whether that’s financially, emotionally, or socially. Together with their support, we can overcome this.”
In addition to the 10% pledge, the three Scotch whisky producers are also encouraging staff and consumers to support The Ben through the charity’s Just Giving page.
Highland distillery Deanston has also partnered with Community Action for Deanston and Deanston Support Group to provide soup from its café to vulnerable groups and school children in the surrounding community.
The distilleries have also launched engagement activity online to keep consumers entertained at home, with Bunnahabhain running a live whisky masterclass on International Whisky Day last Friday (27 March).
More than 60 visitor centres at Scotch whisky distilleries have closed following government advice to help limit the spread of coronavirus.
