Loco Group is Singapore’s ‘first’ carbon-neutral bar operator

The Loco Group claims to have become the first on-trade operator in Singapore to have achieved carbon neutrality after offsetting 100% of its carbon emissions.

The Loco Group has implemented bottle refill programmes to reduce waste

The bar and restaurant operator manages the Super Loco, Lucha Loco and Chico Loco venues across Singapore.

The Loco Group has worked with reforestation start-up Green Steps Group to offset its carbon emissions by investing in tree-planting exercises in tropical forests in Kijani, Uganda. To fund the schemes, a portion of sales from select menu items will go towards the investment.

Across the operator’s four venues, 50% of proceeds from Loco Verde, a cocktail made with agave spirits, lime, cucumber, green apple and celery, will be invested into the operator’s tree-planting efforts with Green Steps Group.

To minimise its impact, the group has also implemented bottle refill programmes to reduce waste and rolled out biodegradable packaging across its takeaway offerings. The Loco Group has also phased out bottled water across its venues and sources ‘sustainably produced’ wines, fish and chicken.

To further its steps to reduce the environmental impact of the food and drinks industry, The Loco Group has partnered with 10 on-trade companies in Asia to form the F&B Sustainability Council.

The council, which comprises distributor Proof & Company and The Lo & Behold Group, will hold quarterly roundtables where members can set their own sustainability targets, share practices and lobby for further support.

The first council meeting will take place on Friday (31 January).
