Hottest bar openings in November 2019

While London looked to Asia for bar inspiration, Australia welcomed a new subterranean drinking den and Starbucks opened a coffee-focused cocktail lounge in Chicago.

November saw a host of Asian-inspired drinking dens open across London, with a saké-focused venue opening in Covent Garden and a Japanese-influenced whisky bar hoping to entice drinkers in the city.

The month also saw new bars open in Brighton, Melbourne and Chicago, which included the launch of a coffee-focused cocktail bar in the new Starbucks Reserve Roastery in the US city.

Cahoots Ticket Hall & Control Room, London

The team behind London bar Cahoots have opened a second 1940s-inspired venue in the heart of the capital.

Cahoots Ticket Hall and Control Room opened on Kingly Street in London’s Soho in November, bringing two new old-school venues to the attention of the city’s discerning drinkers.

On the ground floor drinkers will find The Ticket Hall, which will serve up an “array of hearty 40s fodder”. Hidden beneath The Ticket Hall is The Control Room, which will be “accessible only to those in the know”. Once inside, drinkers can enjoy a “edgier, immersive underground experience”.

Arriviamo at Starbucks Reserve Roastery, Chicago

Coffee-making behemoth Starbucks opened the doors to its flagship Reserve Roastery in Chicago this month, which is home to the chain’s newest cocktail bar.

As well as three coffee bars, the 35,000-square-foot space will also host the Arriviamo Cocktail Bar, which will serve up a menu of aperitivo-inspired cocktails.

Guests at the Chicago bar can sample an “assortment of traditional and unique cocktails”, including the Pour Over Bijou, made with Nikka Coffey Gin, Carpano Bianco, Green Chartreuse, and Liquore Strega, and the Lake Shore, which contains oolong tea, El Tesoro Añejo Tequila, mango yogurt syrup, mango popsicle, lime juice, lime zest and sea salt tincture.

The Malt Lounge and Bar, London

Opening its doors at The Prince Akatoki London hotel this month was premium whisky venue The Malt Lounge and Bar.

Inspired by Japanese cultures and traditions, The Malt Lounge and Bar will serve an “extensive” menu of rare world whiskies, as well as assorted teas and a bespoke Japanese-inspired afternoon tea.

The Malt Lounge and Bar offers a menu of nearly 50 different Japanese whiskies, including rare bottlings that cannot be found outside of Japan, as well as the Private Cabinet Whisky Reserve collection of ultra-rare malts.

Alcotraz, Brighton

Immersive cocktail bar operator Inventive Production has opened the doors to its first venue outside London – Alcotraz in Brighton.

Following the opening of its first venue in east London and a new site in Covent Garden, Alcotraz Brighton will follow the same bring-your-own format of its sister venues, where guests are encouraged to “smuggle” spirits into the bar past a prison guard.

Sam Shearman, founder of Inventive Productions, said: “Our ambition at Inventive Productions is to continue to offer those looking for an alternative and unique drinking experience a night-out that can’t be found anywhere else. These new iterations of Alcotraz take inventiveness to an entirely new level.”

The Ivy Asia, St Paul’s, London

The Ivy Asia, St Paul’s, is the latest Asian-inspired concept bar and restaurant to open in London, promising drinkers in the capital “theatrical drinks and cocktails late into the night”.

Serving a menu of Asian-inspired dishes, this “vibrant and playful” new bar features details such as a fluorescent pink floor, panelled artwork depicting Japanese landscapes and a pink-hued pagoda.

As well as an extensive saké and whisky menu, guests can also sample cocktails such as the Shikok Spritz, which combines Roku Gin, Lanique Rose Petal Liqueur, aloe vera, soda and Prosecco, and the Sakura Royale, made with Mancino Cherry Blossom Vermouth, Briottet Rose Liqueur and The Ivy Champagne.

Oh Loretta, Melbourne

Opening in Victoria, on the outskirts of Melbourne, Oh Loretta is a new bar and restaurant serving “thoughtful food” and “cheeky drinks”.

Opened by a team of hospitality insiders, the new venue serves dishes including fresh oysters, fried cauliflower and small plates made with sugar snap peas and smoked pumpkin.

Guests at Oh Loretta can also enjoy a music schedule that includes DJs playing old-school vinyl records.

Moto, London

Japanese-inspired drinking den Moto opened in London’s Covent Garden this month, boasting an extensive menu of craft sakés sourced direct from Japanese breweries.

With a focus on saké, the bar’s menu features expressions ranging from “light and aromatic” to “rich and savoury” bottlings. The new bar will also offers saké tasting flights to introduce new drinkers to the category.

The food menu at Moto has been built around the drinks offering and features Japanese fare fused with western flavours, each available paired with different sakés from the bar’s menu.

Dessous, Melbourne

The latest spot from Australian hospitality operator The Mulberry Group is Melbourne’s Dessous.

This basement drinking den was developed alongside design firm The Stella Collective, creating a small but inviting space that serves a menu of small plates, wine and cocktails late into the evening.

Drinkers at Dessous can sample cocktails such as the Hollowman, made with mezcal, apricot, ginger and lemon sherbet, and the Peach Blow Fizz, which combines gin, strawberry, soda, lemon, cream and egg white.
