Dalmore debuts 60-year-old single malt
By Nicola CarruthersSingle malt Scotch The Dalmore has released just three decanters of a 60-year-old whisky as part of the brand’s 180th anniversary.
The Dalmore 60 Year Old is limited to three decanters
The Dalmore 60 Year Old is said to reflect the “enduring legacy of the distillery, its pioneering spirit and restless pursuit of the perfect whisky”.
The 41.7% ABV whisky is made from two “extremely rare” ex-Sherry casks from six decades ago, which were filled with spirit first distilled on 7 June 1951.
The casks, which are the very last casks from when the Mackenzie family operated the distillery, have been “slowly maturing and building layers of depth and complexity, with the whisky in each cask evolving in an entirely different direction for 60 years”.
For three generations, the distillery was led by the Mackenzie clan. During that time the family adorned each decanter with the iconic stag.
“Over the course of the past 180 years, The Dalmore has constantly strived for perfection, setting the standards for many other whisky makers today,” said master distiller Richard Paterson.
“The Dalmore 60 Year Old is a fitting tribute to the masterful talents of our distillers past and present, who have all helped to create an incredible body of work. For me personally, nurturing and caring for these two casks has been a true labour of love.
“The reunion of the two spirits has produced an unforgettable whisky that is truly greater than the sum of its parts.”
On the nose, the whisky is said to have a “robust overture of aged oloroso Sherry, treacle toffee, and liquorice stick, with hints of balsamic”.
The palate has notes of pecan pie, banana fig cake, crushed almonds and chinotto oranges followed by black treacle, ginger spice and cocoa powder on the finish.
The second and third decanter will be released in later years.
The Dalmore 60 Years Old will be unveiled at an exclusive celebration at the brand’s home in the Scottish Highlands, before embarking on a global tour to Shanghai, Los Angeles, Taipei, and London. The Dalmore will reveal further details of the sale and global tour in due course.
Earlier this year, Paterson partnered with Michelin-starred chef Massimo Bottura to create a single 49-year-old bottle of Dalmore whisky, which raised US$141,688 for charity.
