Heaven’s Door reveals first Bootleg bottling
Bob Dylan’s American whiskey brand Heaven’s Door has revealed further details of the first bottling in its new Bootleg range, a 26-year-old expression finished in Japanese mizunara oak barrels.
The Bootleg Series 2019 Edition was finished for six months in Japanese mizunara oak barrels
The Bootleg Series 2019 Edition bottling will be the inaugural release in the range of limited edition rare whiskeys, named after Dylan’s Bootleg Series of albums.
Mizunara oak is thought to be one of the rarest and most expensive types of oak in the world.
Bottled at 55.7% ABV, the 2019 Edition is said to have a low rye content, allowing for the flavours from the mizunara oak barrels “to shine without creating a liquid that is overly oaked”. It was distilled and matured in ex-Bourbon barrels for over 26 years before being finished in mizunara oak barrels for six months.
On the palate, the whiskey is said to have notes of coconut, coriander with a “native incense” of clove. It has an exotic lingering finish that is “generally associated with the Japanese whisky category”.
The 2019 Edition is recommended served neat, over ice or with a splash of water.
The expression is presented in a handmade ceramic bottle featuring Dylan’s painting, Train Tracks. It also comes with a numbered leather case.
“We’re thrilled to finally be releasing our first Bootleg Edition, something we’ve been working on for several years,” said Ryan Perry, Heaven’s Door master blender. “With such a unique finish and rare whisky stock, we hope it excites whiskey aficionados and collectors alike.”
Each annual release from the Bootleg series is expected to launch in autumn.
The 2019 Edition is priced at US$499.99 per 750ml bottle and will be available in the US from December. The whiskey is available for pre-order on reservebar.com.
Dylan launched the Heaven’s Door brand last April in collaboration with Angel’s Envy Bourbon founder Marc Bushala.
The Heaven’s Door range includes Tennessee Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Double Barrel Whiskey and Straight Rye Whiskey.
In April 2019, Dylan revealed plans to open a new distillery for the brand in Nashville, Tennessee, which is expected to open in autumn 2020.
