Canopy Growth begins production of ‘distilled cannabis’ drinks

Canada’s Canopy Growth Corporation has begun production of cannabis-based drinks this week following the opening of a new facility.

The new beverage portfolio marks the advent of “cannabis 2.0”

Canopy Growth – which has received billions of dollars in investment from beer, wine and spirits group Constellation Brands – received a licence to open a 150,000 sq ft beverage facility located at its headquarters in Smiths Falls, Ontario.

The group will begin production of cannabis-infused beverages immediately using its patented ‘distilled cannabis’ process. It will initially offer 11 beverages, which will begin shipping throughout Canada “within weeks”, while more drinks products will be added to the portfolio “throughout the year”.

“This licence represents years of hard work to bring our vision to life,” said Canopy Growth CEO Mark Zekulin. “We are deeply proud of the team’s hard work and dedication that has brought us from the tear-down of the original building in early 2019, through to the completion and licensing of our brand new facility.”

Canopy Growth worked with Constellation Brands to design the equipment used at the new facility, and structure the business operation.

“Cannabis beverages have the potential to introduce an entirely different demographic to the cannabis category by presenting them with a familiar product format and an onset time akin to beverage alcohol,” continued Zekulin.

In addition to beverages, Canopy Growth’s “cannabis 2.0” product line will include chocolate and vaping devices.
