Brussels sprout-flavoured gin bauble goes on sale

Edinburgh-based Pickering’s Gin has extended its spirit-filled Christmas bauble collection with the launch of six new flavours, including Brussels sprout.

The Brussels sprout-flavoured gin bauble was made from last year’s unwanted vegetables

Pickering’s released its gin-filled Christmas baubles range, described as the “first of its kind”, in November 2016.

Returning for 2019, the Pickering’s Festively Flavoured Gin Baubles range features six new Christmas-inspired gins – Christmas Clementine, Festive Cranberry, Spiced Pear and Cinnamon, Figgy Pudding, Plum and Ginger, and Brussels Sprout.

Thought to be a world first, the Brussels sprout-flavoured gin is said to have a “sprouty” aroma, and a “sweet, slightly nutty taste with a green, herbaceous and peppery twang”.

Pickering’s used 10,000 (100kg) of Brussels sprouts – equivalent to 2,000 Christmas dinners with five sprouts per serving – to create the gin at its Summerhall Distillery.

The leafy greens were sourced from Crofts Farm in Arbroath, Scotland. Only “forgotten” sprouts from Christmas 2018 were used.

“We launched the first ever Christmas gin bauble back in 2016 and it became an instant hit with gin lovers around the country – making it a must-have gift,” said Marcus Pickering, co-founder and head of export.

“However, this year we really wanted to spice things up and to take the original and best gin bauble to the next level. We are thrilled to finally be able to share our unique festive-flavoured gin baubles.”

Matt Gammell, co-founder and head distiller, added: “It was an interesting challenge trying to balance the unmistakable flavour of Brussels sprouts to get the taste just right – and the distillery had a very distinct aroma while the gin was being distilled.

“However, we love the end result and it is the ideal tipple for friends and family to share together this Christmas.

“We expect gin fans will be out in force to snap up this year’s baubles to ensure they can taste the world’s first Brussels sprout-flavoured gin.”

The limited edition six-pack of baubles is available to buy in the UK directly from the Pickering’s website, priced at £25 (US$30). Each bauble contains 50ml of gin, bottled at 37.5% ABV.

Proceeds from the sale of every six-pack will go to the Contact the Elderly’s Community Christmas campaign to fund Christmas lunches.
