Jesse Vida designs Art Deco-inspired Atlas menu

Singapore bar Atlas has launched a new Art Deco-influenced cocktail menu, the venue’s first drinks list created under the guidance of head bartender Jesse Vida.

The new menu, called Interbellum, is named after the period between the First and Second World War, which was when the Art Deco movement flourished.

Celebrating the period’s design, art, music, culture and fashion, the menu is divided into five chapters that are named in honour of events and milestones from the period.

“For this menu, it was important for us to stay close to the philosophy and vision of Atlas, and take inspiration from classic cocktails of the Art Deco period,” said Vida, who joined the bar from New York’s BlackTail last year.

“Using fresh and house-made ingredients, each drink has been inspired by this most seductive of eras, while showcasing a blend of traditional European influences with an updated touch. We look forward to welcoming guests to journey with us through the stories.”

The Interbellum menu includes the Mr. Schulze’s Sour

The first chapter, called International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, highlights the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris. As well as the signature Atlas Martini, this section is also home to the Art & Influence, which is flavoured with jasmine, lemon and honey.

Chapter Two: The Discovery of King Tutankhamun contains drinks that reflect the era’s fascination with ancient Egypt and King Tut. Cocktails in this section include The Boy King, which is made with oloroso Sherry, sweet vermouth, Aperol, apple cider syrup, black lemon bitters and Champagne.

The Age of Airships is the menu’s third chapter and honours the maiden flight of the Hindenburg airship in 1936. In this section, imbibers will find the Mr Schulze’s Sour, named in honour of the Hindenburg’s beverage director, Max Schulze, and made with dry gin, absinthe, lemon, egg white and bloody shiraz.

The fourth chapter is called A Time for Bold Ideas and honours the publication of Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Drinks include the REM, which is inspired by the concept of ‘sleep learning’ and combines cream, Cognac, banana liqueur, raspberry liqueur and aromatic bitters.

Finally, the fifth chapter is The Jazz Age, which pays homage to the Parisian music scene of the era. The chapter includes Soldier’s Song, which consists of non-alcoholic spirit, lemon and almond syrup, and bay leaf.
