Amsterdam distillery creates botanical white rum

A distillery in the Netherlands has launched what it claims is the world’s first botanical white rum, made with natural ingredients such as Amalfi lemons, blue eucalyptus and kina bark.

Union Lemon & Leaf Rum joins Union Spice & Sea Salt Rum in the range

Union Lemon & Leaf Rum is the second launch from the Amsterdam-based Spirited Union Distillery, following dark rum Union Spice & Sea Salt, which also contains botanicals.

The new expression’s ingredients also include Sri Lankan black tea, sarawak pepper and sarsaparilla root, “creating distinctive grassy citrus notes” and a “complex spicy finish”. It is a Mauritian agricole rum distilled from sugarcane juice.

“Our quest is to create union between the vast and colourful world of botanicals – giving birth to vibrant and exciting botanical rums,” said distillery founder Ruben Maduro, adding that his approach to rum-making was inspired by his upbringing on the Caribbean island of Aruba.

“The Spirited Union Distillery is a botanical rum distillery on a mission to introduce a new approach to rum; one away from artificial aromas and sickly-sweet spirits.”

Maduro added: “By re-distilling and infusing rums from across the world, with real natural botanicals, we have created an exciting new type of rum that looks beyond tradition.”

This year, Spirited Union Distillery opened its doors to members of the public, offering masterclasses for consumers and bartenders to make their own botanical rums.

Jon Everid, former head of creative at London’s Callooh Callay, joined Spirited Union Distillery as its UK brand ambassador earlier this year. Everid was also formerly the general manager for London rum bar Trailer Happiness. He will work alongside the distillery’s UK distributor, Drinksology Group.

Union Lemon & Leaf Rum has an RRP of £29.95 (US$36.29) and is bottled at 38% abv.
