Woodford Reserve adds wheat whiskey to line-up

Brown-Forman has added a new permanent expression to its Woodford Reserve whiskey range, which features wheat as the dominant grain.

Woodford Reserve Wheat is bottled at 45.2% abv

Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey is available globally. The expression is based on “historical recipes” but is influenced by the core Woodford Reserve Bourbon.

Created by master distiller Chris Morris, the new whiskey is made with 52% wheat, 20% malt, 20% corn and 8% rye.

The Federal Alcohol Administration Act created in 1935 provided guidelines on four styles of American straight whiskeys.

With the launch of the new Bourbon, Woodford Reserve claims to be among the first American whiskey brands to create four expressions based on those standards.

“After Prohibition, the federal government permitted four styles of American straight whiskey, each with a different majority grain – Bourbon, rye, wheat and malt,” said Morris.

“Woodford Reserve now has all four whiskeys as part of its permanent family of brands – Woodford Bourbon, Woodford Rye, Woodford Malt and now Woodford Wheat.

“This new permanent expression highlights our distillery’s commitment to creativity, innovation and dedication to making the world’s best tasting whiskeys.”

The expression is described as having notes of cinnamon, cedar and cooked fruit on the nose.

On the palate, it has hints of “spicy apple sauce and toasted coconut” followed by a “dry” finish with “subtle cocoa nibs and lingering apple peel”.

Bottled at 45.2% abv, Woodford Reserve Wheat has a suggested retail price of US$34.99 per 750ml bottle.

Last month, Woodford Reserve officially opened its new visitor centre in Kentucky.

Woodford Reserve is set to join the ranks of million-case spirits in the next fiscal year following a push from Brown-Forman.
