Compass Box debuts second No Name peated blend

Independent Scotch bottler Compass Box has released the second edition of its No Name blended malt whisky, which combines two heavily peated single malts.

Compass Box has released the second expression in its No Name peated series

No Name No. 2 follows the release of No Name in October 2017 – the bottler’s peatiest whisky to date. The No Name series explores the “varied shades of peat”.

A total of 8,436 bottles of No Name No. 2 have been released worldwide, with an abv of 48.9%.

The new expression combines two peated single malt whiskies, including one from Port Askaig in Islay, which has been aged in refill Sherry butts. The other malt hails from the Isle of Skye and has been aged in recharred American oak hogsheads for a “spicily smoky and fruity profile”.

The peated whiskies have been blended with old single malt whisky from Brora in the Highlands and a dash of Highland malt blend finished in French oak.

John Glaser, Compass Box founder and whisky maker, said: “No name can do justice to the smoky character of these whiskies, so we decided No Name was the perfect banner under which to release our blends of heavily-peated single malts.”

“Still very smoky indeed, No Name No. 2 will transport you straight to the peat bogs and malt kilns of Scotland’s west coast.

“Weighty on the palate, hugely complex and concentrated, No Name No. 2 also introduces a degree of delicacy to the series; there is an elegant mix of dried fruit notes, reminiscent of red cherries. We also find a floral quality, which is unusual with smoky whiskies.

“Those who enjoyed the original No Name, and who are familiar with ‘The Peat Monster, will love this latest limited edition. It is proof – if it were needed – that peat is far from one dimensional.”

Priced at £110/US$145, No Name No. 2 is available in the UK and select international markets. It will launch in the US from September 2019.
