Coca-Cola debuts mixers for dark spirits

The Coca-Cola Company has teamed up with four leading bartenders to create a new range of mixers for premium dark spirits.

Created to be paired with dark spirits, the Coca-Cola Signature Mixers range is available in four flavours

Described as a “global first” for the soft drinks heavyweight, the Coca-Cola Signature Mixers range features four new flavours.

The American firm challenged four bartenders to take the flavour of its flagship soft drink brand Coca-Cola and experiment with more than 200 ingredients for the new mixer range. The collaborative project began in March 2018 with the most popular four flavours chosen for the first batch.

The mixer range includes: 01 Coca-Cola Signature Mixers Smoky Notes, 02 Coca-Cola Signature Mixers Spicy Notes, 03 Coca-Cola Signature Mixers Herbal Notes and 04 Coca-Cola Signature Mixers Woody Notes.

The first offering was created by Max Venning of London venues Bar Three and Three Sheets. The “intensely aromatic blend” is noted as having “smoky hints” with ylang ylang, ambrette seed and dried fruit balancing the Peru balsam and amber. It is recommended paired with spiced rums and premium whiskies.

02 Spicy Notes was developed by Adriana Chía of the Antigua Compañía de Las Indias in Barcelona, and Pippa Guy of The Savoy’s American Bar in London. It is described as a combination of lime, ginger, spicy jalapeño, rosemary and jasmine with “zest and earthy flavours”. It can be served with spiced rums, aged and gold Tequilas, spicy or sweet whiskies.

Created by Antonio Nevares of Dr Stravinsky in Barcelona, 03 Herbal Notes delivers “fresh and herbaceous” notes, balancing lemongrass with dill seeds and tagetes. It is recommended with ‘amber’ whiskies and most types of rum.

Meanwhile, 04 Woody Notes by Alex Lawrence, group bar manager of Lyan bars, is a “subtle blend of earthy patchouli, citrusy yuzu and aromatic basil”. The mixer can be served with golden rums and woody whiskies.

Petre Sandru, country manager of Coca-Cola Ireland, said: “Coca-Cola has always had a synergy with dark spirits and classic cocktails, from the inception of the iconic Cuba Libre in the late 1900s to the popular whiskey and coke in the early 20th century.

“With the rise of mixed drinks, we’re excited to announce the launch of Coca-Cola Signature Mixers, a specific range uniquely created to mix with dark spirits.

“Working with an inspirational group of global mixologists to create amazing flavour combinations, we hope Coca-Cola Signature Mixers open up the world of mixology to an even wider audience.”

The Coca-Cola Signature Mixers takes inspiration from the brand’s founder and inventor Dr Pemberton in 1886 by bottling the mixers in a Hutchinson glass bottle. The bottle’s silhouette predated the iconic contour bottle, which was first used by Coca-Cola in 1894. Each batch is stamped with the signature of its co-creator.

The new range is not the first time The Coca-Cola Company has tapped into the alcohol category. The soft drinks giant made its first foray into the world of alcoholic beverages in 2018, with the launch of a low-abv shōchū-based ready-to-drink brand, called Lemon-Do.
