Spirits Master: Tequila Herradura Plata

As we approach Mexico’s annual Cinco de Mayo celebrations on 5 May, what better way to mark the occasion than with the award-winning Tequila Herradura Plata.

Tequila Herradura Plata was also named one of SB‘s esteemed Taste Masters

In the fourth edition of our Spirits Masters series – articles celebrating some of the top scoring Master medallists from The Global Spirits Masters blind-tasting competitions – we profile Tequila Herradura Plata.

In the Ultra Premium Blanco round of last year’s Tequila & Mezcal Masters, the Master-winning Herradura Plata was praised for its “many layers”.

In addition to receiving a Master medal, the spirit was named Taste Master – meaning it was deemed ‘best in class’ among the Master recipients on the day.

“I thought this was incredibly well balanced,” said one judge, who likened the expression’s flavour to a cherry brioche. One of only three Masters in the blind-tasting competition, Plata also impressed judges with its “notes of rose petals and cooked agave”.

The competition assessed categories ranging from premium añejo to flavoured Tequila, and mixto blanco to reposado mezcal.

Founded by Félix López, Herradura has been producing super-premium 100% agave Tequila at the Hacienda San José del Refugio since 1870. Brown-Forman’s Herradura Plata is crafted using 100% blue agave and is aged in American white oak barrels for 45 days.

The horseshoe on the bottle – herradura in Spanish – is an ancient symbol of good fortune and protection.
