Bushmills gets green light for distillery expansion
Irish whiskey distillery Bushmills has been granted planning permission to build a second facility at its existing site in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
Bushmills has been given permission to expand its distillery
The new site will include a new malt intake, mill, lauter tun, washbacks, still house, tank farm and evaporator.
The planning application also includes building a boiler house and cooling towers, as well as the relocation and enlargement of existing warehouses to meet production needs.
The proposed site will have an annual malt distilling capacity of seven million litres of alcohol, which will be phased once the new facility has been completed.
Furthermore, the application said the expansion would bring additional jobs for the construction industry and full-time positions at the distillery once it is up and running.
The planning committee concluded: “Having taken into account the expert advice from the competent consultees listed, the proposed granting of consent is considered acceptable in this location having regard to the regulations, area plan and other material considerations.
“The consent is for a development which is an appropriate use of the land and is acceptable in terms of its layout and appearance. Recommend approval with conditions.”
In 2017, Bushmills revealed plans to build 29 maturation warehouses as part of a £30 million (US$36.5m) development plan.
Jose Cuervo bought Bushmills from Diageo in 2014 in return for full ownership of Don Julio Tequila.
