Which of these is the world’s best Margarita?

Patrón Tequila is on the hunt for its Margarita of the Year and has recruited a host of leading bartenders to mix up their own innovative twists on the classic cocktail.

Patrón Tequila teams up with eight leading bartenders for the latest Margarita of the Year contest

Bacardi-owned Patrón Tequila has partnered with eight bartenders from around the world as it searches for the 2019 Margarita of the Year, challenging each to develop a creative twist on the Tequila-based cocktail.

This year’s cocktails include a Chinese-inspired Margarita created by Hong Kong bartender Jay Khan and a cocktail developed to “capture the magic of a New York sunset”.

Participants in the 2019 contest include Miami-based Tyler Kitzman, Mexican bartender Adrian Martinez and California-based bartender Samuel Jimenez.

The public have been invited to vote for their favourite Margarita in this year’s contest, with the winning cocktail being named at the finale on 25 April at Patrón’s brand home Hacienda Patrón in Jalisco, Mexico.

Dynasty Margarita

Created by Jay Khan of Hong Kong bar Coa, the Dynasty Margarita brings together the traditional Chinese ingredients of lychee and ginger with the fresh agave notes of Patrón Silver Tequila to create a citrusy and sweet Margarita.

Ingredients: Patrón Silver Tequila, Patrón Citrónge Orange, St-Germain liqueur, lime juice, ginger syrup, lychee syrup, grapefruit salt rim and lime twist for garnish

Flamingo Park

Created by Tyler Kitzman of Miami, the Flamingo Park uses sparkling grapefruit water to add an “unexpected pop” to the cocktail. Patrón Reposado Tequila grounds the cocktail with earthy oak notes, while a spicy rim gives it a subtle heat.

Ingredients: Patrón Reposado Tequila, Patrón Citronge Orange, grapefruit sparkling water, lime juice, agave syrup, Martini Bitter, Tajîn, sea salt and black pepper rim and a dehydrated lime wheel for garnish

Golden Hour Margarita

Created by Natalie Jacob, this Margarita uses pineapple, turmeric and Patrón Reposado Tequila to “capture the magic of a New York sunset”. The addition of lime and chilli also gives the cocktail a citrusy and spicy twist.

Ingredients: Patrón Reposado Tequila, Patrón Citronge Orange, pineapple juice, lime juice, turmeric agave syrup, salt, turmeric and chilli pepper rim and a pineapple wedge for garnish

Margarita Amore

Created by Italian bartender Cristian Bugiada, this Margarita is underpinned by the oaky notes of Patrón Reposado Tequila, while the unexpected flavour combination of apple and chilli pepper come together in perfect harmony.

Ingredients: Patrón Reposado Tequila, Patrón Citronge Orange, apple juice, lime juice, passion fruit syrup and a fresh chilli pepper for garnish

Margarita Caliente

Mexican bartender Adrian Martinez uses Patrón Silver, passion fruit and chipotle to create this Margarita. The cocktail also uses orange marmalade to add a dash of sweetness to keep things interesting.

Ingredients: Patrón Silver Tequila, Patrón Citrónge Orange, lime juice, passion fruit syrup, Chipotle Tabasco, orange marmalade and an orange twist for garnish

Paseo Margarita

Chicago-based bartender Jacyara de Oliveira created the Paseo Margarita, which features a “surprising mix of coconut and basil” in tribute to his journey from Brazil to Chicago. Oliveira uses Patrón Silver Tequila to bring together the best of both worlds, resulting in a sweet and herbal Margarita.

Ingredients: Patrón Silver Tequila, Patrón Citronge Orange, coconut milk, lime juice, simple syrup, basil leaves and a rose salt rim

Pasifika Margarita

Created by Oakland-based bartender Samuel Jimenez, the Pasifika Margarita was created after he was inspired to bring the cultures of the San Francisco Bay Area together with the sweetness of coconut, a fruity punch of pineapple, and a wave of crisp Patrón Silver Tequila.

Ingredients: Patrón Silver Tequila, Patrón Citronge Orange, coconut water, pineapple juice, lime juice, ginger syrup, simple syrup and two pineapple fronds for garnish

Wild Rose Margarita

Canadian bartender Makina Labrecque created the Wild Rose Margarita, which has a velvety mouthfeel and subtle floral notes. The addition of juniper in the cocktail was inspired by Labrecque’s mum’s love of the perennial and Patrón Silver for its classic Margarita flavour.

Ingredients: Patrón Silver Tequila, Patrón Citronge Orange, Cocchi Rosa, simple syrup, lime juice, Bombay Sapphire, rose water and a fanned strawberry for garnish
