Mr Lyan to open Amsterdam bar in April

Revered bar owner Ryan Chetiyawardana has revealed further details of his new Super Lyan bar, which will open in Amsterdam this April.

Chetiyawardana – aka Mr Lyan – first unveiled plans to move Super Lyan from London to Amsterdam and open a new venue in Washington DC earlier this year.

Super Lyan will open in the Kimpton De Witt hotel in Amsterdam in mid-April. The “all-day neighbourhood bar” will have a “Mr Lyan sense of playful nostalgia” and bring a philosophy of ‘re-imagining the familiar’.

The new venue marks his first international venture outside of London.

In keeping with the rest of his venues, Chetiyawardana will work with a local team to “put his vision of sustainability and innovation” into the new site.

“Although I love London, I love being able to travel and experience new cultures. I love to eat and drink my way around the world,” said Chetiyawardana.

“And sometimes you come across a place that makes you feel like you want to live there, or to embrace the culture and the setting. Amsterdam with its incredible history, warmth, fun and charm is one of those places for me.

“As a culture, the Dutch have been inclusive and progressive for centuries, and that optimism was something I found incredibly inspiring.”

The new venue will featured a roofed courtyard, which will be open from early morning until late at night serving food and drink all day.

Bartender Thomas Datema, formerly of Hiding in Plain Sight and co-founder of Rosalia’s Menagerie in Amsterdam, will run Super Lyan on a day-to-day basis with support from Alex Lawrence, head of bars for the Mr Lyan group.

Creative director Jacu Strauss and his team at Lore Studio led the design of Chetiyawardana’s Dandelyan bar on London’s Southbank and will be responsible for the interior design of Super Lyan.

The design will feature “whimsical and candy coloured influences while playing on the optimism of the fifties”. The “playful” style will complement the original features of the historic building.

Chetiywardana announced the closure of his award-winning cocktail bar Dandelyan in October last year.
