Bushmills unveils acacia-aged Irish whiskey

Proximo Spirits-owned Bushmills has released a limited edition single malt Irish whiskey aged in acacia wood, called Bushmills Distillery Exclusive.

Bushmills Distillery Exclusive is aged in acacia wood – one of the world’s oldest woods

Limited to 12,000 bottles in the first release, Bushmills Distillery Exclusive is only available to buy from The Old Bushmills Distillery in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, at an RRP of £74 (US$93.25) per 700ml bottle.

The non-chill-filtered whiskey is first matured in charred Bourbon barrels and toasted Sherry casks, and then aged in acacia wood for more than a year – the first time the brand has matured whiskey in acacia wood. It has been bottled at 47% abv.

Helen Mullholland, master blender at Bushmills, said: “As the world’s oldest licensed whiskey distillery, it was only natural that we create a whiskey using one of the world’s oldest woods.

“We are always exploring new ideas and looking for new woods to experiment with, so we were keen to work with acacia, as the product imparts a spicy, vanilla flavour into our famous whiskey.

“The taste of the Distillery Exclusive is subtly spiced by the casks, with warming hints of nutmeg. The liquid features honey and floral notes complemented by sweet vanilla and dried fruit flavours, finishing with a hint of cinnamon and a whisper of wood.”

Bushmills recently received planning permission to build 29 additional maturation warehouses as part of a £30 million (US$36.5) development “to support its long-term growth plans”. The distillery said it is “awaiting further positive news” around its planning application to expand distilling capacity at its current site.
