R&B Distillers puts Borders distillery plans on hold

R&B Distillers will focus on its Raasay Distillery and Tweeddale blended Scotch brand rather than constructing a new distillery in the Scottish Borders.

R&B Distillers planned to construct a distillery in the Scottish Borders as well as on the isle of Raasay

R&B Distillers had initially planned to construct a distillery in Peebles in the Scottish Borders, however the brand will instead focus on production at its Raasay site.

A statement released by the company said: “Originally when we started the R&B Distillers project, we had an ambition to build a distillery in Peebles in the Scottish Borders.

“While we still have this ambition, we felt that it is better to focus on our Raasay Distillery in terms of projects just now.”

R&B Distillers previously launched its Borders Grain whisky, which was developed to demonstrate the style of whisky that would one day be produced at the Peebles site.

The whisky maker later unveiled its Tweeddale Scotch whisky brand and currently produces three expressions in the range, including blended and single grain bottlings.

The statement continued: “As Tweeddale is our established brand, it felt better to grow the range with Tweeddale Grain of Truth.

“We are still very committed to bottling complex grain whiskies with unusual mash bills and finishes.

“We also hope to try and produce a grain whisky at our Raasay Distillery site in the future, which would be very exciting to do.”

Raasay Distillery, which plans to launch the first whisky distilled on site in 2020, has unveiled the latest instalment in its While We Wait series of whiskies – which was created to replicate the style of whisky produced at the site.
