Oxford Artisan Distillery launches rye cask sale

The Oxford Artisan Distillery (TOAD) is giving whisky fans the chance to purchase casks filled with its rye spirit.

The new-charred American oak barrels hold enough spirit to produce 300 bottles of rye whisky

The distillery is selling 225-litre new-charred American oak barrels filled with its rye spirit, which is distilled from English heritage grains.

Cory Mason, master distiller at TOAD, said: “Whilst other distillers buy grain in, we grow ours at four organic farms in the surrounding area – this genetically diverse, ancient grain is both high in quality and sustainable.

“For this cask offer, I’ve created a mash principally of rye – a rarity in English distilling – complemented by barley and wheat, which differentiates the liquid from American rye whiskeys, which are generally complemented with corn.”

The casks, which cost £6,000 (US$7,860) each, contain enough spirit to produce 300 bottles of rye whisky at 46% abv. The cost of each cask includes storage, insurance, an annual sample of the spirit and personalised labels for the aged whisky.

Mason added: “For a hint of the great whisky to come, you can try our Pure Rye Spirit, which will be available to buy from November. It has an intoxicating aroma of sandalwood, vanilla, and praline, with a palate of cinnamon and toasted grain, followed by a finish of caramel and subtle spice.

“Triple-distilled and briefly rested in an American oak cask, the rose gold spirit already shows incredible potential – imagine what a further three years of maturation will do.”

The distillery, which opened in July 2017, recently offered consumers the chance to buy shares in its business.
