Macallan 1926 falls short of world record by $250k
A bottle of The Macallan Peter Blake 1926 60-year-old Scotch whisky failed to set a new world record when it sold at a Sotheby’s auction in New York for US$843,200.

Only 40 bottles of The Macallan 1926 were released in 1986 following a 60-year maturation period in Sherry casks, each with a £20,000 (US$26,000) price tag.
Of these bottles,12 were given to pop artist Sir Peter Blake to design, and a further 12 were commissioned to fellow pop artist Valerio Adami. The Sir Peter Blake bottle sold by Sotheby’s on Saturday (13 October) was labelled bottle nine of 12.
Last week, a bottle of The Macallan Valerio Adami 1926 60-year-old set a new world record for the most expensive bottle of Scotch sold at auction. The hammer came down on a final price of £848,750 (US$1.1m) at a Bonhams auction in Edinburgh – US$256,800 more than the latest Sotheby’s sale, which had been expected to reach up to US$1.2m.
Next month, the sole bottle of The Macallan 1926 60-year-old Scotch hand-painted by Irish artist Michael Dillon is tipped to become the first whisky to sell for £1m (US$1.3m) when it is auctioned at Christie’s in London.
