Whistle Pig unveils fifth Boss Hog expression
American whiskey maker WhistlePig has unveiled the latest release in its Boss Hog series – The Spirit of Mauve.
The Spirit of Mauve was created in honour of one of the brand’s founding celebrity pigs
The fifth expression in the series of whiskeys, said to be “superior to anything the brand has previously made”, has been aged for 13 years and finished in casks that previously held Calvados.
The Boss Hog series of whiskeys are single barrel expressions that are bottled at cask strength and aim to be “powerfully complex and distinctly unique from anything done before”.
The Spirit of Mauve has been created as a celebration of one of the brand’s founding celebrity pigs, called Mauve. Finished in ex-Calvados casks in honour of Mauve’s love of apples, each bottle features a handcrafted pewter stopper in the shape of Mauve ascending to heaven and a casket-inspired gift box.
Dave Pickerell, master distiller for WhistlePig, said: “The Spirit of Mauve is my favourite Boss Hog release so far. It is full-flavoured yet subtle, with lots of warm spice and apple notes. It’s like drinking Grandma’s apple pie.”
This newest edition in the series is bottled at 57.9% abv and carries a suggested retail price of US$499.99.
On the nose, The Spirit of Mauve is said to have notes of mulled cider, cardamom, candied ginger and tobacco, while the palate has flavours of maple syrup, pears, dark chocolate and French oak spice.
