Slane fills first barrel with distillery-made spirit

Ireland’s Slane Distillery has filled its first barrel, marking the start of phasing in distillate produced onsite into the Slane Irish Whiskey blend.

Slane Distillery has filled its first barrel

Situated on the grounds of Slane Castle in the Boyne Valley, Ireland, the distillery’s first cask contains new make malt whiskey made from barley harvested on the Slane Castle Estate and filled into a Sherry hogshead.

Brown-Forman acquired Slane Castle Irish Whiskey in 2015 and invested US$50 million in constructing a distillery and visitor centre on the historic estate.

Slane Irish Whiskey first launched in 2017, made using third-party liquid and matured in virgin oak, seasoned and Sherry casks.

Alan Buckley, assistant manager of Slane Distillery at Brown-Forman, said: “This is an important milestone for any new distillery but one we are especially grateful for at Slane Distillery.

“It’s rare that you get to build a distillery from the ground up, particularly one on grounds as historic as the Slane Castle Estate. That’s part of what makes this first barrel that much more special.”

The Spirits Business was granted a behind-the-scenes look at Slane Distillery ahead of its completion earlier this year.
