Ian Macleod Distillers appoints GTR head

Scotch whisky producer Ian Macleod Distillers has named William Ovens as its global travel retail director.

William Ovens is Ian Macleod Distillers’ new global travel retail director

Ovens succeeds Andy Lane, who will retire at the end of the year following 12 years at Ian Macleod Distillers, and previous posts with Beam, and Whyte and Mackay.

As global travel retail director, Ovens will be responsible for driving growth of Ian Macleod’s spirits portfolio in travel retail, including Glengoyne, Tamdhu, Smokehead and King Robert 11 whiskies, and Edinburgh Gin.

Ovens joins the group having previously worked as international commercial director at Quintessential Brands for four years, where he established the company’s global travel retail division. He also aided Quintessential’s expansion into 90 new domestic markets.

From 2001 to 2010, Ovens was at the helm of Edrington’s global travel retail business.

“I am delighted to return to the Scotch whisky industry, whilst retaining an involvement in the gin category,” said Ovens. “Ian Macleod Distillers is one of the most dynamic and respected companies within the drinks industry and I’m thrilled to join the business.

“Our brand portfolio is outstanding and the brands have all enjoyed strong growth in the GTR channel over recent years. We are currently working on a strategy to take them to the next level.”

Earlier this year, Ian Macleod Distillers added a new expression to its peated Smokehead Scotch range and unveiled a new design for the brand.

In November last year, the group secured an £80 million refinancing package to help the revival of silent Lowland distillery Rosebank.
