Most recently, Wellard worked as senior vice president of operations for the American Bakers Association, and assistant secretary and treasurer for the International Baking Industry Exposition.

Before working with the American Bakers Association, Wellard worked in financial leadership positions at the National Association for Secondary School Principals, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington, and the National Children’s Center.

He holds a BA cum laude in economics from Ursinus College, and an MBA cum laude in accounting and finance from the University of Maryland.

Wellard said: “I’m excited to join the Distilled Spirits council, the leading voice for a vibrant industry in a dynamic environment.

“The council is one of the most prestigious national associations in Washington and is widely recognised as a leader in advocacy at the state, federal and international levels.

“I’m also proud to join an organisation that strongly supports responsibility and moderation.”

The Distilled Spirits Council has reported numerous position changes recently. Beam Suntory’s Clarkson Hine was appointed interim CEO of the trade body in June this year, following the departure of former CEO and president Kraig R Naasz at the end of June.

Diageo’ North America’s Deirdre Mahlan was also appointed chair of the Distilled Spirits Council in June.
