The British Raj period will be channelled for a new ‘gin and tea’ bar based in the UK town of Cheltenham.

The Memsahib Gin and Tea Bar is the brainchild of the team behind Cheltenham’s East India Café and is seeking to raise £55,000 (US$71,000) through crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.

It is described as the “world’s first gin and tea bar, offering house-distilled gin, afternoon chai and snacks”.

The venue takes inspiration from the British Raj era, which refers to the period of British rule on the Indian subcontinent between 1858 and 1947.

The bar’s name refers to the European women who lived in India throughout the colonial period. Many Anglo-Indian women settled in Cheltenham in the 19th century.

“Our customers absolutely loved the idea of mixing gin and tea together and after extensive research this is why we decided to open the Gin and Tea Bar,” said Rasel Mahmud, development chef at East India Café.

In addition to serving gin and tea-based drinks, the bar will offer an Anglo-Indian food menu and 55 gins from around the world.

Its house-made Masala Gin recipe was developed by three chefs and includes botanicals such as coriander, betel leaves, burnt cloves and Asian ginger.
