Boozy business lunches becoming ‘thing of the past’

The days of enjoying a beer, glass of wine or Martini during business lunches are fast becoming a thing of the past in the UK as people become more health-conscious, according to new research by Deliveroo.

Most professionals wouldn’t dream of a three-Martini lunch these days

The on-demand delivery platform surveyed 2,000 workers and found that seven in 10 never drink alcohol during business lunches.

Almost 25% said their boss wouldn’t stand for it, while 46% said they prefer to stick to water.

“Our own data shows that despite the decline of boozy lunches, offices are now increasingly being treated to Friday afternoon drinks, with alcohol orders to offices increasing 93% on Fridays compared with other week days on Deliveroo,” said Joe Groves, head of consumer communications at Deliveroo.

The survey also revealed that professionals go out for “far fewer” work lunches than they did 10 years ago.

Meanwhile, 57% of respondents said some of their most lucrative deals were agreed over a boozy lunch, with 62% claiming that the “fun side” of business and client relationships has been lost.
