Johnnie Walker unveils rare Port Ellen blend

Diageo has released the second edition of its Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare – a new blend made with liquid from silent Islay distillery Port Ellen.

The new expression includes whisky from Port Ellen, Caledonian, Carsebridge, Mortlach, Dailuaine, Cragganmore, Blair Athol and Oban distilleries

Blue Label Ghost and Rare Port Ellen is the second in a limited edition series of special releases made using whisky from closed distilleries.

The bottling follows the launch of Blue Label Ghost and Rare Brora last year.

Port Ellen distillery closed its doors in 1983 and the brand is one of the most highly collectible in the Scotch whisky industry.

The new Blue Label expression also includes whisky from Mortlach, Dailuaine, Cragganmore, Blair Athol and Oban, as well as silent distilleries Caledonian and Carsebridge.

Johnnie Walker master blender Jim Beveridge said: “These whiskies deliver a fascinating glimpse into another world, exploring the unique, inimitable character of whiskies from a small number of iconic, closed distilleries that lend something very special to every drop of Johnnie Walker Blue Label. It’s really interesting to be able to put a spotlight on the character of these whiskies.

“‘Ghost’ whiskies from Caledonian and Carsebridge add layers of creamy, vanilla sweetness whilst rare malts from Mortlach, Dailuaine, Cragganmore, Blair Athol and Oban deliver rolling waves of waxy citrus, rich malt and tropical fruit flavours – all perfectly balanced by the distinctive maritime smokiness of Port Ellen that lingers in the long and warming finish.”

Bottled at 43.8% abv, Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Port Ellen will be available globally in October at an RRP of £275 (US$360.80) for a 700ml bottle.

Last year, Diageo revealed its plans to spend £35 million (US$46m) on restarting production at closed distilleries Port Ellen and Brora by 2020.
