India’s interest in vodka and gin on the rise

Vodka and gin sales in India are expected to grow over the next five years, with gin forecast to surpass three million cases by 2022/23, according to two new reports.

Sales of gin and vodka could rise by 9% and 12% respectively over the next five years

As explained in the Indian Gin Market Overview 2018-2023, published by online market research company researchandmarkets.com, the Indian gin market is predicted to increase by more than 9% CAGR between 2017/18 and 2022/23.

The report noted that while gin is often more expensive than other spirits in India, an increase in disposable income, changing demographics and a rise in the awareness and growing popularity of cocktails will all contribute to a rise in gin sales.

A second report published by the online firm, the Indian Vodka Market Overview 2018-2023, forecast that vodka sales could achieve double-digit growth (12%) over the next five years, driven by sales of flavoured vodka – which the report said has attracted a younger demographic towards vodka consumption.

The report attributed the rise in vodka’s popularity to “the increasing number of bars and party culture in India”.

While spirits sales in India have been slowed by legislation in certain areas, producers are optimistic that millennials could help drive sales in the country.
