Alexandrion Group to open US distillery

Romanian spirits producer Alexandrion Group will invest US$40 million to open a distillery in New York, which is expected to be completed in 2020.

Alexandrion Group produces brands such as Saber Elyzia liqueurs and Brâncoveanu brandy

Subject to local approvals, the 120,000-square-foot distillery and tasting room will be located in Putnam County. It will create 102 new jobs over five years. The distillery will produce “premium spirits” for the US market including Bourbon, gin, brandy and vodka.

New York’s chief economic development agency offered the Romanian firm up to US$2.7m in performance-based tax credits through the Excelsior Jobs Programme.

Chairman of Alexandrion Group, Nawaf Salameh, said: “We are delighted to work together with the local authorities in a large project that will introduce Alexandrion Group to the American market.

“It is an opportunity to share from our expertise in order to develop new products tailored for the US customers. Investing in the local economy is a strategic move that will allow us to be present in the United States and use this base as a starting point for exports in the rest of the world.

“We are convinced that this partnership will be successful, with great benefits for both Alexandrion Group and the local community.”

State Liquor Authority chairman, Vincent Bradley, said: “The Alexandrion Group’s decision to establish its first United States distillery in the Mid-Hudson region is testament to this approach and a win for the State, as another major producer joins the growing ranks of New York’s distilleries, creating jobs and economic development in the process.”

New York currently has 160 craft distilleries, with more than 100 new distilleries opening since 2012. Additionally, there are 131 farm distilleries in the state – a 360% increase from 28 in 2012.

Alexandrion Group has offices in Romania, Cyprus and Brazil. The company produces Saber Elyzia liqueurs, Brâncoveanu brandy, Alexander Vodka and Gin, Kreskova vodka and Zolmyr liqueurs.
